Origin-terminal choice

The closest station is not always the best option. Compare the domestic truck distance and cost against departure frequency, cut-off discipline, consolidation capability and destination coverage.

For Pearl River Delta suppliers, a service from a nearby South China hub may reduce domestic handling. For mixed suppliers in eastern and central China, a more distant consolidation hub may offer a better planned departure. The decision must be based on the shipment date and destination, not a permanent ranking of cities.

Border and corridor risk

Cross-border rail involves changes of rail gauge, customs/transit procedures and multiple railway operators. Ask for the intended corridor and what happens if it changes. A rerouting can affect transit documents, sanctions screening, insurance and destination delivery.

For cargo to Central Asia, confirm whether the service ends at the destination country or continues under a separate road/rail handoff. For EU cargo, identify the first EU entry point and the party responsible for security and transit filings.

ICS2 for rail arrivals
