Three points to know
- Use Wh per 24 hours, not only rated watts. Rated input is useful for cables and protection; daily Wh is the starting point for runtime.
- Temperature and use must be disclosed. Ambient heat, freezer setpoint, door openings, food load and ventilation change compressor run time.
- Recharge is part of the product. A battery that lasts one day is not an off-grid solution unless the available solar, alternator or mains input can restore that energy reliably.
Why catalogue runtime can mislead
Dometic’s current CFX5 support pages list 12–24 V DC or 100–240 V AC input and distinguish rated input current from average energy consumption. They tell users to estimate runtime from usable battery capacity divided by average consumption. This is named-product-family guidance, not a hot-climate runtime guarantee.
EcoFlow publishes unusually useful condition labels for its GLACIER Classic. The 35 L version is listed with a 298 Wh plug-in battery and up to 43 hours of runtime, but the footnote states that the test was at 25°C ambient in Eco mode. Its US specification also publishes 165 Wh/24 h for refrigeration at 4°C and 520 Wh/24 h for freezing at −18°C, again at 25°C ambient. Those figures demonstrate two procurement rules: temperature mode changes consumption, and the test condition must travel with the claim.

These are benchmark disclosures from retail brands, not a ranking and not proof that a Chinese OEM offer will match them.
The 24-hour power-chain test
Ask each factory to test the exact sample in a controlled but market-relevant setup.
- Record fridge model, sample serial number, internal usable volume and refrigerant.
- State ambient temperature, starting product temperature, target setpoint and whether the unit is in refrigeration or freezing mode.
- State load mass, load material, door-opening schedule and ventilation clearance.
- Power the unit through the offered DC cable and connector at the intended 12 V or 24 V input.
- Measure energy at the input for 24 hours with a Wh meter; record minimum voltage, compressor cycling and any low-voltage cut-out.
- Repeat at the hotter agreed condition if the product is marketed for Gulf, North African or West African use.

Inspect the weak links
A strong compressor cannot compensate for a loose vehicle socket, undersized cable or power station whose DC output shuts down. The RFQ should specify cable length and conductor size, connector type, fuse, low-voltage protection levels, reverse-polarity protection and 12/24 V automatic detection. Test the temperature of the plug and cable at sustained operation and record voltage at the fridge while the compressor starts.
Also check the condenser inlet and outlet. Packaging should not encourage users to push the hot-air outlet against a vehicle wall. For distributor products, request replaceable DC cables, AC adaptors, fuses, handles, hinges and control boards as priced spare parts.
Hard cooler or electric fridge?
Choose a hard cooler when ice is reliably available, trips are short, power is uncertain and product simplicity matters more than freezing. Choose a 12V compressor fridge when users need repeatable refrigeration or freezing over multiple days and can maintain a dependable power-and-charge chain. This decision box replaces a separate overlapping article; it should be validated against the buyer’s actual trip pattern.
Safety and the destination file
IEC 60335-2-24:2025 includes mobile refrigerating appliances and battery-operated appliances up to 24 V DC within its published scope. This makes the standard a useful scope check, not proof that an offered product conforms. The test report must still identify the exact appliance architecture, regional version and clauses assessed; “IEC 60335-2-24” should not be copied onto every battery-fridge RFQ without technical review.
If a product includes a lithium battery, battery test documentation, transport classification, packing and destination requirements need a separate evidence check before shipment. This article intentionally does not prescribe one global customs or certification route.
